The bogeyman called battery degradation: How much capacity does an EV really lose after 5 years?

Start talking about buying an electric car among friends or on online forums, and you will almost immediately run into the same argument from the sceptics: "After a few years the battery will die, lose its capacity, and the car will be ready for the scrapyard." This myth has become one of the biggest bogeymen of modern mobility.
Many people picture the traction battery in a car like the battery in their smartphone, which after two or three years of intensive use is ready for replacement.
But is this fear justified? What does real-world data from millions of kilometres driven on European roads tell us, and how much capacity does an electric car actually lose after the magic 5 years of operation? Let's look at the facts.
Phone vs. electric car: Why does the car last so much longer?
Comparing the battery in a phone with the one in an electric car is technical nonsense. We carry a smartphone in our pocket, where it freezes or overheats in the sun, it gets charged with cheap chargers, and it has minimal protection.
An electric car, on the other hand, has literally its "own laboratory" built around the battery. The traction battery is controlled by a sophisticated management system (BMS – Battery Management System). At every moment, this system monitors the temperature of the cells, the amount of current, and the minimum and maximum voltage limits.
Most importantly, the batteries in modern EVs are actively liquid-cooled or heated. If it is below freezing outside, the car pre-heats the battery to its ideal operating temperature. Conversely, if you are fast charging on the motorway in summer, the cooling system will not allow the cells to overheat to dangerous temperatures.
What does the hard data say after 5 years?
Statistics and in-depth tests of hundreds of thousands of vehicles show surprisingly positive results. According to extensive analyses by independent diagnostic companies and real-world operating data, the loss of capacity looks like this:
Average annual degradation: A healthy, properly managed battery loses on average 1.5% to 2% of its capacity per year.
Condition after 5 years: After five years of normal driving, the battery health (SoH – State of Health) typically sits in the range of 90% to 93% of the original capacity.
In practice, this means that if your new car had a range of 350 kilometres, after 5 years you will cover roughly 315 to 325 kilometres on a single full charge. That is a difference you will barely notice in everyday use. There is no dramatic "failure" or sudden death of the battery.
Not every 5-year-old car is the same: What affects the health of the cells?
Although the average is optimistic, you will find huge differences among used cars. Two completely identical cars, built on the same day, can be in a completely different battery condition after 5 years. Three main factors decide:
1. Charging type (AC vs. DC)
If the previous owner charged the car mostly at home on a slow charger (alternating current – AC), for example overnight, the battery experienced almost no thermal stress. But if the car served as a company vehicle on motorways and was "fed" exclusively at ultra-fast chargers (direct current – DC), the degradation will be more pronounced and the condition after 5 years can drop below 85%.
2. The vehicle's thermal management
Older and cheaper electric cars (for example the first-generation Nissan Leaf or the VW e-up!) did not have active liquid cooling of the battery, only air cooling. These cars degrade faster, especially if they were driven in a hot climate or fast charged repeatedly in quick succession. Modern EVs with a liquid cooling circuit are far more resistant to thermal stress.
3. The driver's habits (the 20-80% rule)
Lithium-ion chemistry does not like extremes. It feels best when charged between 20% and 80%. If someone left the car parked at the airport for two weeks discharged to 2%, or on the contrary kept it constantly charged to 100%, they accelerated the chemical ageing of the cells.
How to avoid buying the 5-year-old exception to the rule?
The data clearly shows that degradation after 5 years is not a bogeyman that should put you off buying a used EV. Most of these cars still have many years of reliable service ahead of them.
The problem, however, remains that as a buyer you do not know how the previous owner treated the car. Did they drive it gently, or did they overheat the battery at DC chargers?
